Space Opera Part 39 – Helmets

JJ and I finished at the bar and headed for the tin can.

“You look nervous,” JJ told me as we got to the transport station.

“I’m okay,” I said. “Was that enough to eat?”

“Sure. Glad I didn’t drink more than one glass of wine.”

We climbed into our car. The door slid shut, and we took off towards the main bay, riding silently the entire way. The car opened, and we got out, walking to the lift and riding it down to the bay floor.

Tim was coming down the Zephyrus ramp when we got there.

“Oh, hi, Captain,” he said. “Everything going okay?”

“Yep, we’re good,” I said.

“Got an invite for training with the Nano suits. Are you the trainer?”

“We’ll distribute the training though your AIs, but I’ll be there to help. You know where the mustering room is?”

“Yeah, I’ve played basketball in there.”

Space Opera Part 38 – Speed

We were on the Zephyrus bridge, enjoying Barney’s reaction to the description of the New Jersey.

“It would take more than a day to walk the whole ship,” Barney said, his wide eyes moving from one to another of us.

“We have a transport system,” JJ said. “It’s called the tin can.”

“Why is it called that?”

“Because of the shape of the cars,” I said. “They’re cylindrical, and shoot through a tube at high velocity.”

“Are they magnetic like a railgun?” Barney asked.

“Yep,” I replied. “Deneuve, feel free to take Barney out there whenever you two are ready. Just understand that you’ll get more attention than you’re used to.”

“Captain, perhaps you should put out a bulletin to the New Jersey crew so they aren’t surprised,” Deacon said.

“Excellent idea, I’ll do that. Why don’t you guys wait for a couple hours before you go? That’ll allow some…
